This has featured on my Audioboo, but has never been on my blog despite it being one of my more well know works. Time to put it right in celebration of World Poetry Day!
Enjoy…
Nectar
Will it be you?
Standing tall in the flower bed -
Higher and brighter than the other blooms, competing for attention
Will you catch my eye?
The glory of your petals in the sunlight -
Polished colours radiating, dazzling me with your beauty
Will I be drawn by your scent?
Seduced by your perfume -
Nasal hypnosis, your fragrance dancing in the air
And what if I pick you?
Pluck you from amongst the throng of temptation -
To hold you in my hands, to look upon you with desire
You’d be alluring but fragile, no longer safety in numbers as you lay before me
To caress your stem, let fingers stroke from head to roots
Peeling away your leaves, to reveal your naked trunk
The slimness of your stem leading me to your treasure, highlighted by glowing colours and by the sweetness of smell
Do you want me to continue?
Shall I now devour you?
To peel back your petals, to hunger for what lies within
And then to become your humming bird -
To caress your stigma, to feast upon your nectar
To drink from you until you wilt in my hands
We lay together, both vulnerable, for I am drunk on the treasure you gave up upon me
Intoxicated by your nectar, blinded by your beautiful gift
And what when we both awake, to stir from this banquet of love, will you still be here?
And if you are, what shall I now do with you?
Will I be satisfied?
Or do I return once again to the garden of desires, like Adam seduced by Eden’s apples -
To forage again for another flower to pluck
Or will you be too captivating?
Will your nectar be too addictive, your honey flowing in my bloodstream -
Your love my drug
To care for you, to clothe you in vases and to nurture you until one day -
All our leaves go brown
And when for the final time, we both wilt -
All that shall remain is our scent, drifting on the wind -
Drifting back to Eden.
